A Delaval 16-cylinder marine diesel engine (photo ca. 1972). From June of 1974 until the Fall of 1979 I worked as a technical writer (day shift) and tool manager (swing and graveyard shifts) for TransAmerica Corporation's Delaval Engine and Compressor Division in Oakland, California. I was just out of college and raring to make a life's career. Unfortunately, in 1978 that career plan ran afoul of the recession and a corporate "reorganization" (read "company-wide layoffs"). Fortunately, I had foreseen this and wisely applied for a job with the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park (California), so I was able to step off the deck of one sinking ship onto another heading to an entirely different destination.
