An immature Fluted Giant Clam (Tridacna squamosa) overgrown by a small colony of branching coral. Collected 19 March 1990 (inner reef flat zone, 15 ft depth), Al Shuaybah (120 km south of Jeddah, east shore of the Red Sea), Hejaz Province, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It's difficult to tell whether or not the coral overgrew the clam, killing it slowly: both the clam and the coral seem to be about the same age.
