The twin blowholes typical of baleen whales (balaenopterids) are clearly visible atop this individual's head as it passes close to my boat. Toothed whales (odontocetes) possess a single blowhole. Humpbacks have a sort of "splashguard" known as the blowhole crest that prevents seawater from entering the blowholes when the animal breathes.
