A large male Humpback participating in a particularly violent surface-active competition pod inflates its mouth cavity with hundreds of gallons of seawater, its ventral pleats visibly spreading outward like the pleats of an accordion (linear creases visible just below the open mouth), in preparation for using its head as a bludgeon or battering ram in the increasingly violent shoving match with other males in the comp-pod; the added weight of the seawater adds to the force of the blow.
