Pantropical Spotted Dolphins (Stenella attenuata), Ma'alaea Bay, Maui ( 27 Nov 2011) -- I photographed these Pantropical Spotted Dolphins (Stenella attenuata, subspecies B, a form found around the Hawaiian islands) while boating on Ma'alaea Bay, Maui. Although the "spots" of this dolphin's mature-adult coloration are its distinguishing characteristic, immature animals have a more uniform coloration and so are easily confused with the Common Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus). These fellows were part of a much larger super-pod of more than 50 individuals, an unusually large number for this side of the island. [ Camera info: Canon 40D with EF 70-300 mm f/4 - 5.6 telephoto lens. ]
