As a young adult whale’s head breaks the surface during a breach, the tan-colored “beard” of encrusting barnacles is visible clinging to the lower jaw. Several white parallel scars visible on the upper (dorsal) surface of the whale’s left pectoral fin may be teeth marks, possibly inflicted by an orca (killer whale) or other predator.
