Humpback whales possess a wonderfully elegant marine propulsion system that is the envy of every human marine design engineer: a set of perfectly symmetrical flukes attached to the strongest caudal peduncle (the skeletal and muscular system of the whale’s tail) in the ocean. With just two or three kicks of its flukes, an 80,000 pound Humpback is able to leap entirely out of the water.
