Even at a distance of more than a mile (at the maximum 300 mm focal length of my lens), the “ventral pleats” (the deep grooves running the length of the whale’s body) are clearly visible. These fleshy folds act like the bellows of an accordion, allowing the whale’s mouth cavity to expand to a much greater volume to accommodate the thousands of liters of seawater she takes in during feeding.
