Beach Naupaka (Scaevola sericea), Kanaha Beach Park, north Maui. Soon these individual plants will grow into a continuous mat of foliage, stabilizing the shifting dune sands and so preventing the plants from being uprooted by wave action or beach erosion.
Beach Naupaka (Scaevola sericea). An indigenous shrub, common in hot, dry coastal areas on most of the Hawaiian Islands. Seeds can float for months in the ocean and still germinate after having been in salt water for up to a year. One study showed that the seeds germinated best after 250 days in salt water.
