This part of the island is dominated by the cloud-capped heights of the West Maui Mountains, the other member of the pair of volcanoes (which includes Haleakala) responsible for the formation of Maui.
The dark-red rocks exposed on this cliff face are in the interior of a large volcanic cinder cone that was eroded by wave action, exposing the wall of the cone. Honokahau Bay at mile marker 35 on the Honoapi'ilani Highway just south of Kapalua, west Maui. (See next photo for a more detailed view.)
