The World's Longest Surfboard Fence (according to Guinness' Book of World Records, supposedly) circles more than half of the Ka’ohu Farms property in Pe'ahi, north Maui. It's a collection of more than 400 used boards belonging to DJ Detloff, a long-time Maui surfer.

DJ has used quite a few of the boards himself. Many were donated by neighbors, and some just showed up in his driveway with no explanation. More than a few were fished out of the Makawao landfill.

One of the regular late afternoon downpours at the Hana Maui Botanical Garden, east Maui. Although the daily "showers" are more torrential than gentle, the sound on the tin roof of the cottage where I stay is very restful.
Hasegawa General Store, Hana. Established back in 1919, this local landmark has a whimsical inventory of goods that defies cataloging. It's not unusual to find Hawaiian shirts hanging next to 2-by-4 wooden planks, fresh papayas, and post cards. Swim fins and office supplies occupy the same shelves. A visit to Hasagawa's is like exploring Ali Babba's cave: you never know what gems you'll find poking through its clean-but-cluttered interior.
