The scores of narrow concrete and masonary bridges that span the numerous drainages that cut across the Hana Highway are long overdue for reinforcement or outright replacement (note crumbling barrier wall on right side of bridge!).
This one-lane bridge and the scores of others like it randomly scattered throughout the length of the road to Hana are just one reason why it takes hours to travel a few tens of miles. Warning signs on either end of these bridges give advice all drivers heed: "One-lane bridge - 10 miles per hour". Note the date of this bridge's construction prominently displayed on the whitewashed concrete of its downstream side.

The headland, site of the Hui Aloha Church west of Oheo Gulch, east Maui. A few cars can be seen out near the end of the headland... they belong to a party of hardy locals enjoying a picnic lunch in the roaring onshore wind.
