African Tulip Tree (Spathodea campanulata), growing along the road to Nahiku, east Maui. Related to the Trumpet Vine and Jacaranda. Flower often used to produce strong mustard-yellow to nut brown fabric dyes. This tall tree produces huge masses of bright red flowers that can be seen a mile away! Unfortunately, it is considered to be a noxious weed and invasive species in the Hawaiian Islands.

African Tulip Tree (Spathodea campanulata) -- Related to jacarandas and trumpet vines. Hana Maui Botanical Garden, east Maui. Variously known as the Fountain Tree, African tulip tree, Flame-of-the-forest, or Nandi Flame. It is a tree that grows between 7–25 metres (23–82 ft) tall and is native to tropical Africa. Originally planted as an ornamental tree throughout the tropics, it has become an invasive species in the Hawaiian Islands. The open flowers are cup-shaped and collect rain water and dew, making them attractive to many species of birds. The wood of the tree is soft and so is favored by birds that make their nests in the trunk of a tree.
