Crepe Ginger (Costus speciosus), Keanae Arboretum. Grows wild along most of the Hana Highway. Also known as "Spiral Flag" and "Malay Ginger". The single fluted "petal" is actually the male part of the flower. The rhizomes of the plant contain very potent steroid compounds that are used commercially for birth-control pills. Currently being researched as a possible source of other important compounds of medicinal value.
Pink variety of Plumeria rubra. For some reason, plumeria growing in natural forest settings produce fewer leaves and flowers than cultivated plants. Plumeria can be easily grown by just sticking one of the "deer antler" branches in a shady, well-watered patch of bare soil. This plant was growing close to the beach along Hana Bay in east Maui.
