Flower head of the Indonesian Wax Ginger (Tapeinochilos ananassae), National Botanical Garden, Lawai, Kaua'i. The bright red "petals" are actually bracts, modified or specialized leaves associated with a reproductive structure such as a flower, inflorescence axis, or cone scale. Bracts are often (but not always) different from foliage leaves, for example being smaller, larger, or of a different color or texture. The true flowers are small yellow blossoms like those in this shot.
Torch Ginger (Etlingera elatior), Keanae Arboretum, east Maui.
Red Ginger (Alpinia purpurata), south of Hana Bay. There are 1,400 species of "ginger" plants, a relative few of which have the edible roots so valued by chefs throughout the world. Most varieties are ornamental; all have the distinctive and powerful aroma of ginger.
