These plant species grow in the salt spray and loose sand of beaches and the moist lowland slopes of volcanoes. They flourish in poor soils and under very harsh climatic conditions.

Beach Morning-Glory (Ipomaea pes-caprae), a common woody vine that is very salt-tolerant and so extends it runners and roots all the way down to the high-tide line of a beach. Hawaiian name is "Pohuehue." Latin taxonomic name translates to "Goat's Foot", for the bi-lobed leaf that resembles the cloven hoof of a goat. Kanaha Beach, north Maui.
