These plant species grow in the salt spray and loose sand of beaches and the moist lowland slopes of volcanoes. They flourish in poor soils and under very harsh climatic conditions.

The octopus-like growth habit of the fruit of the Tree Heliotrope (formerly "Tournefortia argentea", now Argusia argentea). Waiehu, north Maui.
A solitary Tree Heliotrope (formerly "Tournefortia argentea", now Argusia argentea) whose roots have been exposed by wave action continues to grow, its main root system clinging to the sandy soil of the un-eroded portion of the berm. Waiehu Beach, north Maui.
A very mature and healthy Tree Heliotrope (formerly "Tournefortia argentea", now Argusia argentea), Waiehu Beach, north Maui. This well-cared-for tree shows how large the species can grow under ideal conditions.
Beach Naupaka (Scaevola sericea). An indigenous shrub, common in hot, dry coastal areas on most of the Hawaiian Islands. Seeds can float for months in the ocean and still germinate after having been in salt water for up to a year. One study showed that the seeds germinated best after 250 days in salt water.
