FYI: A week after I took this shot (1/29/2008), we got snow on the summit! There was enough that I could see it from my office window, blanketing the peak. Yes, Hortense... it DOES snow in Hawai'i.
The U.S.-registered "SS Pride of America" anchored in Kahului Harbor, North Maui. Kahului Harbor is Maui's only commercial-rated harbor. With nearly 260 m-long hull and a draft of nearly 9 m, this big girl seems to dominate our little pond of a harbor. Viewed from a few blocks inland, she looks like a giant high-rise apartments complex. Her 15 decks house more than 2000 passengers and 900 crew. Cruise ship "Pride of America" moored in Kahului Harbor, Maui. She is a U.S.-flagged inter-island cruise ship owned by Norwegian Cruise Lines. She weighs-in at more than 80,000 gross tons and is more than 920 feet (280 m) long. She has 15 decks and carries more than 3,000 passengers and crew. Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pride_of_America for a brief history of a passenger ship that was supposed to mark the re-entry of the United States in the non-military ship-building industry. The POA is one of what may turn out to be a dwindling number of large cruiseliners visiting the Islands in future. Legal, economic, and environmental issues seem to be conspiring to exclude her and similar large-displacement vessels from Maui's only commercial harbor. This would NOT cause local environmentalists to shed any tears. Note the presence of the Coast Guard harbor patrol boat in the foreground.

Kanaha Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary, Kahului, Maui. Situated in close proximity to Kahului Harbor (the only deep water port on the island) and Kahului International Airport, this nearly pristine wetland hosts several endangered bird species, as well as indigenous wetland plant species. A healthy population of freshwater fish sustains the bird population.
