The end of the line: this distinctively carved boulder blocks the rough dirt road that runs along the north coast of Lana'i. From this point the road turns to a foot trail that leads to Shipwreck Beach.

I met the lady who claims to have single-handedly carved this and more than 15 other similar road signs all over Lana'i. She supposedly used a pneumatic grinder and chipper to do the job.
Deserted beach on the site of the old Club Lana'i on the east shore of Lana'i. Looking north toward Moloka'i on the horizon.
A first glimpse of the "wreck" a Shipwreck Beach, the north shore of Lana'i.

Very little is published about how this rotting transport ship's hull ended up on the reef. Most agree that this was originally a World War II Liberty Ship. As to HOW the hulk was run up on the fringing reef, web "historians" differ at best... at worst they have nothing more to say. I read one plausible-sounding scenario where the post-war authorities were trying to dispose of the ship by sinking it in a deep part of the channel off Moloka'i, but the tow cables broke and the derelict was blown onto the reef, where it was left to rust. Sounds good to me...
A close-up of the "wreck" at Shipwreck Beach, the north shore of Lana'i. Most of the superstructure is gone (probably removed for scrap), but the hulk is in remarkably good shape, considering the severity of storms on this side of the island.

"Board Sailing"? The strong winds on the beaches south of Shipwreck Beach make for fast (if a little scary) runs across the reef. Southeast shore of Lana'i.
The "Spouting Horn", a famous blowhole located near Lawai, south Kaua'i.
The "Spouting Horn", a famous blowhole located near Lawai, south Kaua'i.

A blowhole is the product of the marine erosional processes that form cliffs and headlands along an exposed coastline. The continual pounding of resistant rock by storm-driven waves gradually cuts into exposed rock surfaces, exploiting cracks, crevices, and weaknesses along joints and depositional planes by means of hydraulic action (pressure is exerted when waves force air into crevices, and is then released as waves retreat, causing small forceful, high-pressure explosions). In some cases, the rockface is undercut by wave action, creating a cave. Here the erosive force of the waves is magnified and may be directed upward, eventually cutting a vertical path through the cave’s roof all the way to the top of the cliff. When waves enter the mouth of the cave, the energy of the inrushing seawater is such that it is funneled upward through the narrow opening to exit forcefully at the surface as a loud geyser of vaporized water and compressed air.
