Animal Life of Maui Galleries

Humpback Whales of Maui : Each year around late November Humpback Whales crowd into Ma'alaea Bay and the shallows off Maui's south coast to mate, give birth, and suckle the newborn calves. And I get to watch!

Open all of these images in the ORIGINAL format to fully appreciate them.

Birds of Maui : Although humans, livestock, and feral pigs, cats, and mongooses have all done their best to destroy their habitats and kill them outright, birds are about the most numerous and visible vertebrates of any size on Maui. However, as a result of all the "negative attention" they've received, they tend to be very wary of humans, and so birdwatching requires somewhat more patience than on the mainland.

Reptiles of Maui : This is the "Mostly Geckos" gallery. I threw in a Green Sea Turtle that I photographed at the local aquarium, just to break up the monotony. I have seen (but so far not photographed) my share of sea turtles while diving, too. There are also one or two non-gecko lizards and a couple of species of garter snakes in Hawaii, but reptiles are rare here. Rats and pigs and mongooses (to say nothing of the unlikely miracle of a reptilian migration to the Islands) made short work of the rest.

For a boatload of scientific information about geckos, go to Wikipedia's Geckos website (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gecko).

Insects of Maui : Insects: the hardest to find, easiest to photograph! Butterflies, moths (BIG moths!), grass hoppers, spiders, and mantids are everywhere on Maui. The longer I live here the larger my collection of photos of bugs will grow.

Fish & Aquatic Life of Maui : This gallery includes some underwater shots from my dive trips, as well as some photographs of aquarium residents. Dolphins (from Lana'i), crustaceans, and sea urchins round out this small gallery.

See my HUMPBACK WHALES gallery for pix from my whale-watching expeditions.

Mammals of Maui : Unfortunately, mammals have only contributed to environmental degradation in Hawaii. Rats, feral cats, and mongooses eat the eggs and young of birds and reptiles. Feral pigs tear up the soil with their endless rooting for edible plants. Beef cattle and goats have denuded upcountry meadows of most native grasses. Humans... yeah, well...
