Mongoose, Ohe'o Gulch Unit of Haleakala Nationaal Park, east Maui. When I first came to Maui, I thought these little so-and-so's were cute. Since then I've grown to appreciate the threat they pose to all ground-dwelling animals. They have completely wiped out many genera and species of birds and reptiles since they were first introduced. They move extremely fast, but most of the roadkill carcasses I've seen on-island are mongooses. If you see what you think is a squirrel or chipmunk, or some other small furry crittur darting for cover at your approach on the trail, it's invariably a mongoose.
Mongoose, Kipahulu Unit of Haleakala National Park, east Maui. They're cute, but are considered to be "pests" because they've wiped out all of the ground-nesting birds of the Hawaiian Islands.
