A Common House Gecko (Hemidactylus frenatus), clinging to the outer surface of my window. Hana, east Maui. A native of southeastern Asia. It is also known as the Pacific house gecko, the Asian house gecko, or simply, the house lizard. They can be seen climbing walls of houses and other buildings in search of insects attracted to porch lights, hence their name. They grow to a length of between three to six inches (about 7.5–15 cm), and live for about five years. The individual rows of scales along his tail are clearly visible. Hana Maui Arboretum.

This gecko seemed not to be the least disturbed by my camera flash, so I got a good shot showing his bluish-green underbelly coloration and the double-rows of "suction-cups" (for climbing just about ANY surface!), the bright white spots on his toes. This one has lost a portion of his tail, but like many lizards, it will gradually grow back. Near Hana, east Maui.

This gecko's camouflage coloration was so good that I had to bump-up the contrast of this image inside Photoshop quite a bit in order for him to be visible, even though my lens was fairly close to him.

Note the two large "comma"-shaped spots on the leading edges of the wings (definitive of this species). Throughout the New World, this moth is associated with death and is considered a bad omen if it flies into one's house. However, Hawaiian mythology states that if a loved one has just died, the visiting moth is the person's soul returning to say goodbye.
