Michael Garrison  > Animal Life of Hawaii > Humpback Whales of Maui
Photos in this gallery are grouped by the different types of whale behavior. All of the images are from whale-watching cruises with the Pacific Whale Foundation that sailed out of Ma'alaea Harbor on the Island of Maui. Each year I go on about 40 cruises on the waters of Ma'alaea Bay and the Kealaikahiki Channel between Maui and the Island of Kaho'olawe.

A Humpback mother and calf (foreground, below the surface) pair move in close to the M/V OCEAN INTRIGUE. The white coloration of the calf's left pectoral fin and pointed rostrum (upper jaw) is clearly visible just below the surface. Ma'alaea Bay, Maui, 20 February 2011.

Nice "going-away" shot of large female showing the nares (nostrils or "blowholes") and the prominent tubercles on the dorsal aspect of the rostrum (upper jaw). 6 March 2012, Ma'alaea Bay, Maui.
A large female Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) glides lazily at the surface, her immense pectoral fins (the two linear white shadows just below the surface at her sides) extended like the wings of an airplane. The small exhalation just ahead of her is from her new calf. Ma'alaea Bay, south Maui (10 April 2010).
Nice shot of the dorsal fin and back of a Humpback calf that approached my boat for a close look. 5 February 2012, Ma'alaea Bay, Maui.
A large mature Humpback shows off its scuffed and scarred back as it keeps pace with the boat.

Leviathan rises! Frame 1 of a 3-shot sequence taken as a large Humpback surfaces very close to the hull of a Pacific Whale Foundation tour boat; the boat's naturalist leans out over the bow to get her own shot. 5 February 2012, Ma'alaea Bay, Maui.
