Michael Garrison  > Animal Life of Hawaii > Humpback Whales of Maui
Photos in this gallery are grouped by the different types of whale behavior. All of the images are from whale-watching cruises with the Pacific Whale Foundation that sailed out of Ma'alaea Harbor on the Island of Maui. Each year I go on about 40 cruises on the waters of Ma'alaea Bay and the Kealaikahiki Channel between Maui and the Island of Kaho'olawe.

This male participant in an active competition pod does an inflated head lunge: the whale inflates its mouth with air or water, elevates its head at a 45-degree angle, then lunges forward with a quick burst of speed. This is usually aimed broadside to another male in the pod, presumably to intimidate it.

The numerous white rings on its lower jaw mark where barnacles clinging there were subsequently broken off.

Believe it or not, there are at least five whales crowded together in this photo! Lots of blows, head lunges, and fluke-slaps going on amongst the members of this VERY surface-active competition pod offshore from Molokini Crater.
