Humpback Whales of Maui - # - Footprints in Paradise: Photos of Maui & the Hawaiian Islands

Photos in this gallery are grouped by the different types of whale behavior. All of the images are from whale-watching cruises with the Pacific Whale Foundation that sailed out of Ma'alaea Harbor on the Island of Maui. Each year I go on about 40 cruises on the waters of Ma'alaea Bay and the Kealaikahiki Channel between Maui and the Island of Kaho'olawe.

A Humpback calf does a partial breach just offshore from the Kihei Powerplant. Humpback cows and their newborn calves after frequent the shallow, protected waters of the east end of Ma'alaea Bay, much to the joy of boaters and spectators watching from the shore.

A new calf practices breaching in heavy weather offshore from the Kihei Power Plant (note the 3 smokestacks on the horizon) and Ke'alia Pond Wildlife Preserve.
